Matthew Crawford Architects North Fremantle

MCA, under director Matthew Crawford are a small Australian architecture studio with 4 permanent staff and a tight mix of specialist collaborators based in North Fremantle/Walyalup. With this committed team we are focussed on creating poetic, bespoke buildings and interiors in a range of project types - Residential, Hospitality and Education.

The specialist collaborations allow us to work at many different scales and in numerous locations around Australia to bring the same passionate design focus to a broader range of projects. The smaller scale fixed practice allows Matthew to personally oversee all projects, maintaining client contact and design consistency.

Our core focus at MCA is creating positive client outcomes achieved through the realisation of thoughtful, thought-provoking buildings and delivering quality and value in all projects.

We have a broad experience in working with heritage and are passionate about breathing new life into buildings that through time have either been neglected and are in need of attention or no longer fit the purpose for which they were originally built. We have had the honour of working on a number of important historic buildings - The Warders Hotel incorporates Warders’ Block W1 and W2 built in 1851 and 1853 respectively, The Hougoumont Hotel incorporates the Duke of York hotel built in 1903, Skyplay, Angove St Childcare incorporates the north Perth police station 1905 and we have adapted and refurbished houses by historic architects Talbot Hobbs in Croke Lane, Fremantle and Marshall Clifton in Leake Street, Peppermint Grove.

Our work has been recognised publicly and we have received numerous industry awards and been published in a broad number of architecture and design journals throughout North Fremantle and Australia. Specifically, we have received awards for housing, Eagle Bay House, education, Angove Street Childcare, hospitality and heritage, Warders Hotel & Emily Taylor, and interiors, Adam Heath fitout.

Prior to creating MCA, director Matthew Crawford lived and worked in London running a multitude of commercial, institutional and education projects as a senior associate partner with the firm of Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF London). This significant international experience has had a deep influence on his approach, love of history and in such a big city context, appreciation for the importance of our built environment. It also influenced his understanding of how valuable our environment is and the importance of the wellbeing of our natural environment.

At MCA we are passionately committed to enhancing and protecting the natural environment and build in design processes to reduce the environmental impact - sustainable materials choices, lower embodied energy construction methodologies, passive solar capture, rainwater harvesting and the importance of the right landscape solutions.

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work and build our projects.
