DEAN HOUSE
5 Geraldine Street is an iconic Cottesloe property. Located on a quiet cul-de-sac, it looks north through two impressive Norfolk Island pines and south over the grass courts of the Cottesloe Tennis Club to expansive views of the Indian Ocean.
The brief for this house was to take full advantage of this legacy and to weave through references to the owners’ favourite private residences designed by Iwan Iwanoff. As such, the design for this house leans into the modernist brutalist style made famous in Western Australia by the Bulgarian-Australian architect through the mid-20th century.
The materials palette incorporates concrete blockwork, laid in expressive patterns and able to resist the harsh salt-laden sea air, glass blocks to provide privacy while also admitting northern light, large expanses of double glazing to take advantage of the amazing views, and barrel vaulted metal-clad roofs.
The interiors also incorporate expressive concrete blockwork to draw the outside aesthetic through into the interior but then juxtapose these rougher textures with a string of luxurious finishes including venetian plaster, vibrant tile finishes, rich timber veneers and natural granite and marble stonework.
